Who Are JLW Scholars?

Our Scholars

Our Scholars are enthusiastic about attending an HBCU, demonstrate stellar academic performance and are involved in meaningful extracurricular activities. They are students who intend to be catalysts for a more equitable world and whose educational pursuits will have an exponential impact. Our Scholars seek to expand their minds through mentorship and civic-focused initiatives, as well as serve as dedicated ambassadors for the JL Winston Foundation.

Our Alumni

Historically Black Colleges and Universities have an extensive network of distinguished alumni. They include Spike Lee and Samuel Jackson, who both graduated from Morehouse, Toni Morrison got her degree from Howard, and Oprah Winfrey went to Tennessee State University. We expect our alumni to follow in their footsteps and engage in innovative and meaningful work around the world.

EmergencyFunding

Now is a trying time for college students, who are facing an uncertain economy, a public health crisis and higher education that is in a state of turmoil. They may be challenged by difficult circumstances at home, school or work that create unexpected financial setbacks. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has never been more urgent to support at-risk students, providing a necessary safety net so they don’t drop out of school.

The JL Winston Foundation plays an important role in enabling them to continue their education with emergency grants for tuition and other needs. The benefits for the students, their families and their communities can never be underestimated.

Eligibility

Our emergency funding is intended to assist students who have an outstanding balance of less than $2000 for tuition, not including fines, and for whom non-payment would prevent them from graduating or registering for their scheduled final semester. Our emergency funding can be awarded only once.
The following criteria must also be met:

  • Are enrolled in a two-year or four-year undergraduate program
  • Have not yet received a bachelor’s degree
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident, including DACA students
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Household income not exceeding $80,000 USD

StudyAbroad

Studying abroad changes students’ lives in multiple ways, influencing their career path, expanding their world view and enhancing their self-confidence. It is a defining experience in someone’s life that will continue to have a positive impact for years to come. It prepares our young scholars for taking on the world with a new-found sense of themselves, while contributing to fostering peace and global cooperation.

The JL Winston Foundation is thrilled to offer students the opportunity to experience this voyage of self-discovery, which opens the door to other cultures and gives them the chance to learn a new language.

Eligibility

Our Study Abroad scholarship is designed for students who participate in a program that is affiliated with an accredited college or university that requires classroom instruction, field study, volunteering or an internship. Students must attend for a minimum of one semester. This scholarship can be awarded only once.

The following criteria must also be met:

  • Are enrolled in a two-year or four-year undergraduate program
  • Have not yet received a bachelor’s degree
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident, including DACA students
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Household income not exceeding $80,000 USD

Our Alumni

Because students attending HBCUs traditionally study abroad at lower rates than the general student population, these colleges and universities are seeking to increase their enrollment in overseas studies programs. Among the factors leading to more students of color studying abroad is the opportunity for them to connect to their ancestral history. As a result, they are going to a more diverse mix of overseas destinations. We are proud to support our students in their journey of a discovery.
